Atlanta, Georgia Region: Nothing But a Country Curate
Charles Hayter and Other Curates in Persuasion
JASNA member Brenda Cox’s lecture will discuss the place of the clergy in Austen's life and novels, differences between rectors, vicars, and curates, and then detail the life of country curates. Some of them, as Sir Walter said, were "without bread to eat," but not all. Brenda will also explore Charles Hayter specifically, and what kind of living it was that he got in the end that enabled him to marry, and what might happen to him and Henrietta later on. Brenda writes at a blog "Faith, Science, Joy, . . . and Jane Austen!" at brendascox.wordpress.com and she is working on a book titled Fashionable Goodness: Christianity in Jane Austen's England.
