Dayton Region: Plans of Economy in Persuasion
Money and Power
Who in Jane Austen’s culture truly held the power of the purse? Join us for tea and a presentation featuring Austen scholar Linda Zionkowski, Professor of English at Ohio University and most recently author of Women and Gift Exchange in Eighteenth Century Fiction: Richardson, Burney, Austen. Although a family's wealth generally belonged to men, the task of managing that money often fell to women. Linda will explore how attitudes toward spending and saving shape Persuasion's plot and characters, and how the novel proposes a balance between prudence and profligacy, caution and abandon, in money and love alike.
