Education in Jane Austen’s England

School trade cardJoin Julie Buck and Don Jacobson to examine the topic of education in Regency England. Anne deBourgh had a governess, the Bennet sisters did not.  Harriet Smith learned her lessons at a boarding school, Emma did not.  What do we know about education during Jane Austen’s lifetime?  England seemed to stand on the brink of monumental change 200 years ago.  Was education ripe for a change as well? How was education different between rich and poor, town and country?  Explore the clues in Jane’s novels, as well as information about the times to uncover schoolroom practices in Regency England.
