Vancouver Region: “Now or Never: The Origins and Influence of the Kilmarnock Burns”
Talk by Spencer Stuart
In July of 1786, Robert Burns’ Poems: Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect catapulted the 27-year-old from Alloway into the Edinburgh literati and soon worldwide readership. This talk will explore the circumstances around this meteoric rise, and how Burns’ voice aligned with the continuing developments of Scottish national identity at the time. Spencer Stuart holds a master’s degree in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute in London, England. Upon graduation he took a position with Bonhams auctioneers working closely with the North American Rare Books and Manuscripts department in New York and Toronto. Spencer is the recipient of the Director’s Award from the Courtauld and has also received The Directors’ Scholarship from the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia. He operates a collections management service based in Vancouver.
