JANE AUSTEN: Beside the Sea, June 21 - July 2, 2001

Royal Pavilion
Royal Pavilion, Brighton

“Jane Austen: Beside the Sea,” our fourth JASNA-sponsored tour, featured Sanditon along with the six published novels. The group visited a number of seaside resorts, in keeping with the theme of the tour.

The itinerary included places where Austen lived—Steventon, Bath, Southampton, Chawton and Winchester; places she visited—Kent, Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Sevenoaks; and seaside sites noted in the novels—Ramsgate, Brighton, Weymouth. Events included dramatic script readings, a vocal music program of songs of the Austen era, dinner table discussions of Austen’s writings, and Austen-themed group conversations. Maggie Lane, Cassandra Knight, Susan McCartan, and Tom Carpenter were among the featured speakers.

First class and good tourist class historic hotels were scheduled. Full cooked breakfasts were provided daily, plus two lunches, one tea, and five dinners. Members traveled in a luxury air-conditioned motorcoach. Air travel was provided on Virgin Atlantic Airways from Newark Airport to Gatwick Airport, London. The price was $3,499, which included a $200 tax-deductible contribution to JASNA.

All arrangements were custom designed for JASNA by Mary Lou White, Book Adventures, Inc., the tour company that organized the past three, highly acclaimed JASNA-sponsored Jane Austen tours.
