Reading Portraits at Pemberley
When Elizabeth Bennet and her aunt and uncle view portraits at Pemberley—most notably of Darcy and Wickham—we get a glimpse of Austen's own knowledge of the art of portraiture in her time, its functions and goals. In his illustrated presentation, Jeff Nigro will explore how Austen and her contemporaries looked at and thought about portraits, how portraits were displayed in country houses, and how Austen's descriptions relate to traditions of writing about the visual arts.
