Maryland Region: Serendipity in Jane Austen's Fiction
Serendipity in Jane Austen's Fiction
Join the Maryland Region for our annual birthday event. This year, Maria Frawley—professor and chair of the English Department at George Washington University—will discuss Serendipity in Jane Austen's Fiction. Just what does Austen mean when she writes that something was "the work of a moment"? The phrase, or some close variation of it, occurs at many crucial plot points in her novels. Frawley will explore what we learn about Austen's recurring interest in the seemingly sudden event, an interest that runs counter to but helps to accentuate her more well-known embrace of gradually developing understanding.
Cost is $45 for members and $50 for nonmembers. Deadline to register is December 8 at 9 p.m. Buffet lunch is included. Learn more.
