Metropolitan St. Louis Region: What Jane Heard (Virtual)
Music of Her Time
"There are few people in England, I suppose, who have more true enjoyment of music than myself, or have a better natural taste." —Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Long before it could be recorded, music was most often heard and enjoyed in small group settings, and playing and singing with some proficiency were two important accomplishments for women in Austen's era. Like many of the characters in her novels, Austen played the pianoforte, attended concerts and dances, and collected sheet music from English and Continental composers. In this presentation, Rose Nester will explore the instruments, the types of music played and sung, and even the influence of social class in music of this time and place.
