HIS CUNNING OR HERS

LETTER THE ELEVENTH

William Walter Elliot to Penelope Clay

                                                                                                       8 Sydney-place. February 8

My dear Madam,

You may certainly depend on me for assistance and advice on that matter.  Might I suggest that you call here on Thursday in the late morning when, if my acquaintance with the Elliot habits is to be trusted, Sir Walter is taking the waters, cousin Elizabeth is engaged with Miss Carteret at Laura-place, and Miss Anne Elliot charitably occupied in visiting some sick friend in a “lower part of town” (to quote Sir Walter).

I have had some little experience in a case similar to that you describe, though I must concede that the results were not then particularly fruitful.  I trust that my efforts on your behalf may be more profitable and the outcome satisfying to us both.  You may count on my discretion.

                    Yours very sincerely,
                                     Wm. Elliot
