A Star Is Born

A Star is Born Gala 2025 Event

To celebrate Jane Austen's 250th birthday year—as well as the 30th anniversary of numerous filmed adaptations of the author's works, from the 1995 Pride and PrejudiceSense and SensibilityPersuasion, and Clueless—the Southwest Region is planning a multi-day super regional gala with the theme "A Star Is Born." The weekend will include screenings of noteworthy Austen adaptations, an interactive Regency ball, as well as a compelling array of speakers. In collaboration with MASTERPIECE, attendees will also have the option of seeing an advance screening of the first episode of the new Miss Austen miniseries airing on PBS in May.

Austen scholar Devoney Looser is among the JASNA luminaries who will share insights regarding the star power of our favorite author. Opera League favorite Kristi Brown-Montesano will critique the use of music in various adaptations, and costumer Mela Hoyt-Heydon will discuss sartorial choices and conduct a headdress workshop. Jess House will give her wildly popular "The Darcy Wars" discussion, so be prepared to fight for your favorite Mr. Darcy!

The event will be held at the Dena Hotel in Pasadena (discounted room rates are available for those wishing to stay overnight) for the Saturday of the conference, with Sunday's sessions held at the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. Attendees will be able to explore the grounds and collections of the Huntington after the events on Sunday.

You can choose which of the various sessions to attend to customize your experience.
