What a Man Should Be
Join us for a group discussion of Austen's heroes. We will consider two related questions: What are the positive qualities that the heroes possess?And what are the faults or weaknesses they must work to change in order to win the heroine and become good husbands? For Henry Tilney, Edward Ferrars, Edmund Bertram, and Captain Wentworth, their good qualities are apparent through the thoughts and speech of the heroine, while for Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley, and Colonel Brandon, it takes time for the woman he will marry to appreciate his capacity to be a good husband.
