Welcome

Head West, Janeites!

The JASNA Denver/Boulder Region welcomes you to Denver, Colorado. Nestled at the base of the majestic Rocky Mountains, there is no place better suited for diving deep into the many rocky relationships and situations that unfold in Pride and Prejudice.

Denver is known for its proximity to the Rocky Mountains, for being at high altitude (the Mile High City), and for its nature-loving people, themes which can be found in abundance within the pages of Pride and Prejudice.

From Elizabeth and Darcy’s rocky beginnings to the possibly rocky futures of Charlotte and Mr. Collins and Lydia and Wickham, difficult relationships are at the heart of Pride and Prejudice. Nature also plays a significant role in the novel as Elizabeth and Jane worry over Lydia’s crisis “walking together in the shrubbery behind the house,” and as Elizabeth shares her eagerness to visit the Lake District—“Adieu to disappointment and spleen. What are men to rocks and mountains?” Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, and many others, including Darcy, see themselves as being above others. Their arrogance is attitude with altitude.

We look forward to bringing JASNA members an intriguing program of speakers and presentations that explore and discuss Pride and Prejudice with fresh eyes and unique perspectives. When not discussing the subtleties of the novel, AGM participants will have the opportunity to explore Denver and the nearby areas through a variety of excursions and activities.

“Every disposition of the ground was good; and she looked on the whole scene, the river, the trees scattered on its banks and the winding of the valley, as far as she could trace it, with delight.”
