Weather
The biggest surprise for visitors to the Denver area is the climate. The arid conditions bring only 8 to 15 inches of annual precipitation and locals wake up to more than 300 days of sunshine a year. That’s more annual hours of sun than Miami and San Diego! Fall is a beautiful time to visit Denver as it has one of the longest periods of fall colors of any city in the country due to five different climate zones within a two-hour drive of downtown. Pick your elevation and you can find yourself at the height of fall colors from mid-September to mid-November. In early November, daily high temperatures average 58° F, with daily low temperatures rarely falling below 30°F and with typically very little precipitation.
General Guidance Regarding Altitude
Many people don’t notice the difference between the altitude in Denver and that in their home region when going about normal activities. For some, though, it can be physically challenging, especially when visiting higher-altitude areas, such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Pikes Peak. Enjoying these stunning locations can be an exhilarating experience as long as you take steps to ensure your safety and comfort.
Here are some tips for visitors to high altitude:
- Plan ahead: Before embarking on your trip, research the altitude of your destination and the potential effects it can have on your body. Make sure to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying medical conditions that may be affected by high altitude.
- The Gaylord Rockies Resort – 5,400 FT
- Boulder – 5,300 FT
- Denver – 5,280 FT
- Foothills Tour – 6,400 – 7,400 FT
- Rocky Mountain National Park Tour – 7,500 FT to 12,000 FT
- Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods Tour – 6,400 to 14,000 FT
- Acclimate gradually: Take it slow and gradually increase your altitude exposure to help your body adjust to the thinner air. Avoid strenuous activities for the first few days and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
- Monitor your symptoms: Pay attention to any symptoms of altitude sickness, which can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If you experience any of these symptoms, descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.
- Bring appropriate clothing: High-altitude areas can have unpredictable weather, so make sure to pack clothing that can easily layer and protect you from extreme temperatures.
- Carry necessary medication: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure to bring any necessary medication with you and carry it with you at all times.
