Workshops

“The Colonel, though disclaiming all pretensions to connoisseurship, warmly admired the screens, as he would have done any thing painted by Miss Dashwood.”

Important things to know about workshops:

Fan-Painting Social

$15 per session
Thursday, 9:00 am to 10:00 am
Thursday, 10:30 am to 11:30 am
Thursday, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Meet new JASNA friends at this relaxed session where you will use watercolor paints to decorate one or two fans to carry at the Ball and take home as special souvenirs of the AGM. One cannot have too many fans, and you may have opportunity to use them depending on how much dancing you do on Saturday night! The workshop fee includes two bamboo-ribbed paper fans, ribbon, and use of paints.

JASNA Utah Member Glenda Thomas will facilitate this session. She has led many fan-painting sessions in the JASNA Utah Region.

Beading with Jane Austen

$40 per session
Thursday, 8:30 am to 10:00 am
Thursday, 10:15 am to 11:45 am
Friday, 9:00 am to 10:30 am

Learn the beading stitches that make up Jane Austen's own bracelet and create a simple bangle bracelet you can wear as is. This workshop will be led by JASNA Wisconsin member Kim Wilson. You will have the option to continue working at home on a more complex design, following Kim's instructions in her upcoming new book, Celebrating Jane Austen’s Birthday, co-written with Jo Ann Staples. As part of the workshop fee, you will take home a portable zippered kit containing embroidery scissors, ruler, beading mat, bead tray, needles, spools, and thread.

Bookbinding Workshop

$35 per session
Thursday, 8:30 am to 10:00 am
Thursday, 10:15 am to 11:45 am

Apply your sewing skills and learn basic bookbinding from Victoria’s classically trained visual artist, Richelle Funk.

Bookbinding during the time Jane Austen wrote was expensive. However, bookbinding was and is commonly used by artists and writers as a way to quickly assemble word-based art and drawings into a single book for storage. You will first complete a maquette (mini-book) and then a medium-sized 40-page stab-binding book featuring four signatures (sections of paper) and a folding cover. The maquette will fit into a reticule or waistcoat pocket, and the larger book can serve as an AGM notebook or scrapbook – a great way to preserve your memories from the JASNA 2022 AGM in Victoria! The workshop fee includes all materials you will need during the session.

English Country Dance

$25 per session
Thursday, 8:30 am to 10:00 am
Thursday, 10:15 am to 11:45 am
Thursday, 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
Friday, 9:00 am to 10:30 am

“It was settled that there should be a dance in the evening, and that every body should be extremely merry all day long.”

You will receive excellent instruction from our caller and teacher of English Country Dance, Rosemary Lach. She is the founder of the Victoria English Country Dance Society. Learn the steps, gain confidence, and have fun as you prepare for the Ball on Saturday night! Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing for these practice sessions. No experience necessary!
