For Your Consideration...

Metropolitan (1990)

metropolitanscreenOften credited as a “loose adaptation” of Mansfield Park, this literate and touching film, written and directed by Whit Stillman, borrows themes from the novel and plays with the relationship between the hero and heroine. College-age friends attend a round of debutante parties in 1980s Manhattan and pick up the relatively poverty-stricken Tom as an extra man, always valuable to escort the debs; quiet Audrey, a Jane Austen fan, falls in love with him. Questions of class differences and morality reflect Jane Austen’s themes.
